Ever ordered some things online and been nailed with some outrageous duties? Ever not been charged duties at all? Well last night this was finally cleared up for me. This may have already made sense to you, but to all those who don’t understand, here you go.
The example of LL Bean was used for me, because they offer free shipping to all of North America. Now on some items you’ll get dinged with 29% duties and some items you’ll get away with none at all. This all has to do with where the item is manufactured, LL Bean has items imported and items made domestically. Now because of NAFTA all resources and products collected and manufactured in North America are duty-free, but when an item is imported and then shipped across borders it is subject to 29% duties (just another reason to never buy from Urban Outfitters). After understanding this everything in my head all of a sudden clicked and it all made sense, I now know why I seem to always get hit randomly.
So, now that I’m aware of this I know that I can get these beautiful pair of Bean Boots for the price stated with free shipping, because I know that these are manufactured in the beautiful state of Maine. See… Brian Mulroney at least saved us a bit of money.
